  8.     Just as Cincinatti thought it might live down the
  9. embarrassing Marge Schott affair came yet another specter of
  10. bigotry: taking advantage of a federal court decision that forced
  11. the city to permit a huge Hanukkah menorah in a public square,
  12. the Ku Klux Klan erected a tit-for-tat wooden cross nearby.
  13. Though this particular cross was not afire, its sponsorship by
  14. the hate group inflamed local opinion. A day before its erection,
  15. hundreds gathered in a candlelit protest. Hours after the
  16. appearance of the Klan krucifix, a pair of demonstrators toppled
  17. and trampled on it -- but the Klan had a new cross up within
  18. days. Meanwhile, the two vandals were arrested under the very
  19. democratic principles that a century of Klansmen have never
  20. understood.
